VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - In his first public Mass, Pope Francis urged the Catholic Church on Thursday to stick to its Gospel roots and shun modern temptations, warning that it would become just another charitable group if it forgot its true mission.
In a heartfelt, simple homily, the Argentinean pope laid out a clear moral path for the 1.2-billion-member Church, which is beset by scandals, intrigue and strife.

As the College of Cardinals goes into the Conclave to elect the successor of Pope Benedict XV1, one African is among those tipped to emerge as the new pontiff. He is Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana. Going by the rule that only cardinals below the age of 81 will enter the Conclave, it means that the new Pope would not be above 80 years. This rules out Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, who is 81.

The World Awaits New Pope

With the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI taking effect on Thursday, all is now set for the emergence of a new Catholic pontiff. The College of Cardinals, made up of about 120 cardinals from across the world, would converge on the Vatican, go into the Conclave to pick a new spiritual leader for the largest Christian faith in the world.

Pope Benedict, now designated Pope Emeritus, had given notice of his resignation on February 10, 2013, citing failing health as reason. He is the first Pope to have resigned after 600 years and the second to have quit office in the history of Catholic Church.
With Easter coming up towards the end of the month, it is expected that a new Pope would emerge ahead of the celebration, as the chosen one would celebrate the Easter mass.

2015: Jonathan cleared

The perceived ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2015 presidential election has received the blessings of an Abuja High Court, which held that he was eligible to run for the election. Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi held that the tenure of President Jonathan started on May 29, 2011 and not May 2007, because he was not a presidential candidate in the 2007 general election.

Multiple bomb blasts in Borno

Maiduguri, the Borno State capital yesterday was again hit by multiple bomb explosions believed to have been executed by the Boko Haram sect. Three soldiers were feared dead while unspecified numbers of soldiers and civilians were reportedly injured. Residents said the first explosion occurred at about 12:00 noon at Bolori area, as suspected Boko Haram bombers reportedly targeted a Joint Task Force (JTF) patrol vehicle.

Uniport 4: Court frees seven suspects

Seven out of the 18 persons including a female, arrested and arraigned in connection with the killing of four students of the University of Port Harcourt, Choba, in October, 2012, were yesterday, discharged by a Port Harcourt Chief Magistrate Court, following the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
They are Cynthia Chinwo, George Nwadei, Ekpe Daniel, Gabriel Ochie and Endurance Edet (in the first charge), Lucky Agwurum (in the second charge) and Finebone Jeffrey, aka Soso (in the third charge).
