Bloodbath in Benue

No fewer than 20 people have been killed and several houses torched in another attack on Tiv farmers by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Logo, Katsina-Ala and Kwande Local Government Areas of Benue State.

Governor Gabriel Suswam, who disclosed this in Makurdi yesterday while signing the 2014 budget of N108 billion into law, said the three local governments were on fire due to the attack of Fulani invaders on the Tiv farmers in the areas, lamenting that the Fulani mercenaries seemed to be encircling the whole of Benue.

The development has kept residents of Adaka, Adeke Tyonsha and environs in Makurdi away from their homes after suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded the areas over a week ago.

An eyewitness who sent a text message to newsmen from one of the affected areas listed the villages under attack to include Tse-Ibor, Tombo and Mbawar all in Logo Local Government Area as well as some villages in Kwande and Katsina-Ala councils.

“Fulanis are burning houses and killing our Tiv brothers and sisters in Tse-Ibor, Tombo and Mbawar in Logo. They invaded Kwande today, also killing people and burning houses at Anyiase near Kashimbilla. They are said to be heading towards Jato Aka, home of former Power and Steel Minister, Paul Unongo.”

However, when contacted, the state police command which confirmed the report, could not give the number of deaths, but maintained that policemen have been drafted to the area to maintain peace, law and order.
